I'm in NYC for a bit, feeling the winter and working on new sounds. The new issue of Artforum has a big piece on cassette culture and it's present relevance to the art world, etc. I did an extensive interview for the article, but in the end, my quotes got edited out completely. Oh well! Life Like gets a nod as one of the tape labels currently doing their thing, as does 905 Tapes, Tapeworm and others. It's a pretty good article, worth checking out.
While it's nice to be out in the world, and remember the different dimensions of the big city, I'm missing being in Ypsilanti right now.
1.What is your favorite fruit juice?
2.Do the seasons bother or effect you?
3.Is it better to have a lot of ideas or a lot of results?
4.Do you think there is retribution? As in; do horrible people who do horrible things or just generally shitty people, are they already damned by the shittiness of their own lives or do they get away with everything shitty that they do because the world is ok with horrible things?

1. orange or grapefruit sometimes
2. yes, the seasons deeply effect and in some cases bother me
3. maybe a lot of results, having a lot of ideas and not doing anything with them can feel sort of useless. but maybe that's not what you meant
4. not sure
1. orange or tangerine and apple
2. i get pretty affected by winter, which usually leads me to writing a ton of songs about how shitty winter is
3. probably better to have a lot of ideas. ideas don't always work out, but the more you have, the more you can explore. not all of the "tons of results" will be good or worthwhile.
4. i think eventually the shittiness of really shitty people will bite them in the ass. the world is ok with shitty things for the most part, but the world is also stoked when shitty people get their comeuppance.
1. cranberry
2. i love the seasons. nostalgia. i always feel bad for the animals stuck out in the cold. and fred, i hear alot of winter, summer, spring and fall in your songs. from most artists your lucky to get one or two seasons.
3.ideas because they keep you company when your by yourself.
4.ya retribution.
1. orange mostly, grapefruit the rest of the time. pomengranate when i feel like throwing some money around.
2. i despise winter and cold weather in general, depressing things always occur in the winter, this one is no exception but it is what it is. someday ill live in a place where there is no winter
3.ideas are nice because at least youre still using your brain for something, but if youre getting lots of results wouldnt it be implied that you had ideas? (ones that even reached fruition!) so i suppose results are best
4. i dont have much faith in humanity or the world or karma, despite it all i try my best to remain optimistic or realistic. id like to think there's retribution and that things work themselves out, people get what's coming them etc but its mostly wishful thinking. look at all the shitty people everywhere
my replies make me sound really negative.
I think that picture at the top is kick ass!
Is that Don Cherry?
1. Grapefruit.
2. Seasons are insane. I'm going to move where there's only one.
3. Results. Although once I started getting results, it seemed like ideas didn't come as much or as strong. But that's not true, they're more likely to become things. But I don't like how I no longer fill notebooks with ideas.
4. Maybe not retribution but karma. But it's not normal karma. If you do bad things, bad things happen to you. If you do good things, nothing happens to you. It's humbling.
are you still here? do you want to hang out?
love, sonia
1. Guava Nectar
2.Yes, Both...I'm a Spring Sumer Fall guy...winter is the pits.
3.I'm an Idea man.
4.Take my friend Tom for example...actually i hesitate to call him my friend...anway kid is totally spoiled, thinks he's gods gift...people somewhat tolerate him, but the minute he's gone it's one collective sigh of "who invited that guy?"
also, i just wrote a review of your 7" Cops Don't Care which can be read and shared here http://olive-music.blogspot.com/
1. Cranberry and sometimes Grapefruit
2. Absolutely.. I wish that it could be less so, but I know few people who are able to keep their composure through a harsh winter, especially by the end. Being cold is trying... It's hard on the body and it's hard to stay 'up' through that. Once Spring comes around, I bloom with the flowers.
3. I think that processes are just as important as results, but more people are good at coming up with ideas than are good at executing them.
4.I don't necessarily believe in retribution.. I don't believe in any sort of fate, though. If you're a positive and compassionate person, you will be rewarded in life, and vice versa but that has to do more with a self-imposed path and not any sort of discernible 'fate'.
the article would have been more interesting with your perspective!
1. fresh raspberry apple from the farmer's market
2. yes
3. a lot of ideas
4. i think they get away with it for a while but it gets them at some point.
